Travel insurance: what conditions at what cost?
Many companies offer insurance solutions to manage the risks associated with vacation. What are the covered risks, and how does a travel insurance work? Our explanation.
The list of covered risks varies from one company to another, and accordeing to the chosen formula. Globally, a travel insurance covers the following situations:
- Cancellation of the trip: for example if a journey must be cancelled due to illness or an accident.
- Damage to luggage: the value of the personal luggage can be insured in case of damage during transportation.
- Loss or theft: the luggage can be insured as well.
- Health problem while abroad: it is also possible to fill the deficits of an insufficient health insurance, or add new benefits for an optimal security.
- Vehicle damage: for vehicles that are not insured with a casco insurance, it is also possible to make a temporary coverage
In addition to the coverage provided, a travel insurance allows to benefit fully from a 24h / 24 helpline. In case of problem, the traveller can therefore obtain immediate help or information.
Short reporting deadline
In the event of a problem, it is recommended to report the situation as soon as possible to the insurer. Indeed, the deadline is sometimes short, and the insurer could reduce benefits if the problem hasn't been reported on time. For that reason, it is a good idea to always keep the helpline number with oneself.
It is possible to insure only one person, or the whole family. A family coverage is of course much interesting than making one insurance for every traveller.
Type of insurances and cost
The travel insurance is available in two versions: a one-time coverage, or an annual coverage. The one-time coverage can be made within the travel agency when booking the trip, and generally costs only a few dozen Chf. The annual coverage offers a permanent protection, irrespective of the number of travels. All in all, it is always a good idea to ask a specialist before signing a new contract. Indeed, the latter will be able to compare offers and thus get a lower premium.
